Key Stage 4 Physics

The Cambridge IGCSE Physics is designed as a two year course with two levels of attainment – Core and Extended, the majority of students will study the Extended syllabus at MIS. As students progress they will build on their knowledge of scientific theory and investigation and develop a detailed understanding of Physics and its place in real-world scenarios.

Each student will study the following areas of Physics :

·         General physics and application

·         Thermal physics

·         Properties of waves

·         Electricity and magnetism

·         Atomic physics


The aims of the course are to enable students at MIS to :


·         better understand the technological world, with an informed interest in scientific matters

·         recognise the usefulness (and limitations) of scientific method, and how to apply this to other disciplines and in everyday life

·         develop relevant attitudes, such as a concern for accuracy and precision, objectivity, integrity, enquiry, initiative and inventiveness

·         further interest in, and care for, the environment

·         better understand the influence and limitations placed on scientific study by society, economy, technology, ethics, the community and the environment

·         develop an understanding of the scientific skills essential for both further study at A Level, and beyond, and application in everyday life.


Method of Assessment


Students will be assessed on their knowledge of both theory and practical skills in three papers as follows :

N. B. Most students will sit the extended examinations and so will sit Papers 1, 3 and 6


Paper 1 45 minutes

Multiple choice question paper

Weighted at 30% of total available marks


Paper 3 1 hour 15 minutes

Extended theory paper

Weighted at 50% of total available marks


Paper 6 1 hour

Alternative to Practical

Weighted at 20% of total available marks




Students who complete the course successfully will have an excellent grounding in Physics which will prepare them for further study of Physics at A’Level and beyond. This course develops thinking skills that are valuable in any career but which will be of particular relevance in a wide variety of careers including, but not limited to:


·         Astrophysicist

·         Aerospace

·         Theoretical physics research

·         Medicine

·         Energy scientist

·         Particle physicist
