September 2017, pupils entering Year 10 will embark upon a new IGCSE
Mathematics course which aims to significantly challenge and strengthen the
mathematical ability of pupils at all levels. This reflects the current
practice and changes in the UK with respect to GCSE examinations.
in Mathematics are no longer awarded as letters A*-G and are instead graded
numerically as 9-1 with grade 9 representing performance at a level above the
old A* grade.
Specification at a glance
This Edexcel International
GCSE qualification (4MA1) is a two-year course and comprises of two externally
assessed papers. Students are entered at either Foundation Tier or Higher Tier
according to ability. Historically, over 70% of our pupils have sat the
examination at Higher tier.
Foundation Tier students will
take papers 1F and 2F. Questions in the Foundation Tier paper are targeted at
grades in the range 5-1 The highest
grade which will be awarded at Foundation Tier is grade 5. Higher Tier students
will take papers 3H and 4H. Questions in the Higher Tier paper are targeted at
grades in the range 9-4 The highest
grade which will be awarded at Higher Tier is grade 9. There is now a
significantly larger degree of crossover between tiers than in previous
specifications. Students who fail to achieve grade 1 on Foundation Tier will be
awarded a grade U (Ungraded).
assessment: Two papers, assessed through 2-hour examinations set and marked by
Edexcel. Calculators are allowed on both papers.
